15, 2000. SoftMap Technologies Inc. of Quebec, Canada,
has today announced that it will begin licensing the map
visualization technology used in its popular SoftMap ProTM,
SoftMap LiteTMand SoftMap NatureTMproducts.
The technology will be licensed to multimedia developers
and map publishers in two forms.
For multimedia application and product developers the
company will offer SoftMap ToolkitTM,
a library of Component Object Modules (COM) that provide
programmers access to SoftMap's efficient map display,
navigation, manipulation, layer superimposition, database,
searching and measurement functions. SoftMap's COM-based
toolkit is an inexpensive and low cost method for incorporating
map visualization functions being developed in most Microsoft
Windows-based environments (C++, Visual Basic, MS-Access,
etc.) Pricing for SoftMap ToolkitTMbegins at US$5000.
SoftMapTMalso will now
provide its technology through its new AllianceOEMTMlicensing
program. This program will permit licensing of the complete
SoftMap LiteTMmap visualization
software for use in a developer or publishers own product
line. Under the AllianceOEMTMprogram,
SoftMap will assist publishers in digitizing and encrypting
their maps, adding a proprietary multimedia "front-end",
including appropriate address or data search capabilities
and publishing a finished proprietary CD-ROM based on
the publishers or third party maps bound to a version
of SoftMap LiteTM. SoftMap
LiteTMis an easy-to-use,
powerful, and state-of-the-art viewer for browsing and
annotating digital maps. Licensing fees under the AllianceOEMTMprogram
range from US$3 per license upward to US$12 depending
on volume.
Jean Tremblay, Vice President of SoftMap, sees both new
programs as a response to the growing demand for easy-to-use
map visualization technology. "Non-expert users are
demanding access to map and geographic information toolswe've
been deluged with requests from developers and independent
publishers to access our user-friendly technology. We
